The Fania label is, was, and will always be the most important salsa label. Featuring 16 tracks recorded between 1967 and 1975, El Barrio includes then-elder statesmen like Tito Puente and Mongo Santamaria as well as new-breed icons like Ray Barretto and Willie Colon. It was no accident that the cover featured mobsters and a Rolls Royce: this music, revved up on rock and funk, had energy and attitude because it came from the mean streets of the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Spanish Harlem. It was dangerous and fun, done by musicians who lived by a fast and loose set of rules. Sadly, things went sour for the genre and the label in the '80s, and real salsa dura became hard to come by. But now the dormant label has reemerged to share this great music with a new generation of fans. El Barrio is the first offering of the new era and a great introduction for those who wonder what all the fuss was about. --Tad Hendrickson
